being drafted

tl;dr : I went to India in April. Our house got burglarized and I lost a brand new Asus zenbook 14.
Police in India required the mac numbers on the laptop so that it can identified when connected to an Indian ISP. (scary that they are able to track this - eh :).

The mac address can easily be generated using a few simple commands on the command line. (note to future self - store the mac ids for all other machines I have).

As luck would have it, I had not noted the mac id. Asus agreed to provide the mac ids, but only if the copy of the FIR (First Information Report - a document that a case is registered with the police is available).

On providing the FIR copy, Asus now wanted the serial number of the machine written on the FIR.
Given that my uncle isnt the cop writing up the report, getting the FIR changed in India was next to impossible.
I submitted the original police complaint that was attached with the FIR which had the serial number.

Now Asus wanted that complaint to be sealed by the police. The charming bald guy that I was, I got the investigating officer to seal the document.

Asus now went back to wanting the number on the FIR itself. This means that the thief is actively assisted by Asus by preventing the police from tracing the machine.

Keep in mind, I provided the original reciept, the details of the credit card on which this was bought and sent the request from the email address using which the machine was purchased.

Asus still wants to protect the privacy of the thief.

I plan to write specific details on how Asus actively negatively affected the investigation of the theft of their machine bought a mere 3 months before the incident, so that the consumer in India and elsewhere can keep this in mind when considering a laptop purchase.
