Types of Thinking
There are focussed and diffused thinking. Both have a role to play in learning. Learning is efficently done, when moving from one to the other.

Focussed thinking is when concentrating of a specific subject, consciously
trying to learn or understand.
The mental model around it is that of a dense set of nodes of ideas.
Diffused thinking is when the latent memories of the thinking are played in our
minds.
The mental model is of a diffused set of ideas that are playing back on what was
concentrated on.
